Biography

Sofia El-kholy is a pioneering Egyptian researcher and designer who has uniquely bridged Korean and Arab cultures through the art of calligraphy and design.

As the first researcher in the world to combine the two cultures and explore this fusion, her work is a testament to the power of cultural exchange and artistic innovation. With a Ph.D. in design from Chung-Ang University, department of design in Seoul South Korea 2017, she has dedicated her career to exploring the intersections of tradition and modernity, creating a new visual language that harmonizes the artistic heritage of both cultures.

 

Currently a design professor at the Faculty of Specific Education, Alexandria University, Sofia has been shaping the next generation of artists and designers since 2008. Her expertise has earned her prestigious roles, including Director of the Korean Art and Culture Center in Egypt, Doctoral scholarship recipient at Korea's National Institute for International Education NIIED, South Korea 2013 - 2017, and a research fellowship at Hanyang University in South Korea.

 

Sofia’s scholarly journey has been marked by numerous awards, including the Grand Prize at the Chusa Kim Jeong-hee Memorial Hangeul Calligraphy Contest 2016 and the Excellence Award at the Gwanghwamun Director’s Hwihoe Contest 2015 in South Korea.

 

Beyond academia, Sofia’s passion for design is deeply rooted in her commitment to fostering cross-cultural dialogue. Her work embodies a seamless blend of Korean and Arabic aesthetics, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression while preserving the rich traditions of both cultures. With an unwavering dedication to her craft, she continues to inspire and redefine the global landscape of design and calligraphy.
